The Sleep Disorders Center of Georgia has a seasoned, professional staff dedicated to helping you get a good night sleep. Our team consists of exceptionally trained physicians and support staff that share a passion for serving our patients' needs.


James Wellman, M.D., ABSM

Dr. Wellman is the Medical Director of the Sleep Disorders Center of Georgia. He founded and directed Georgia's first nationally certified sleep laboratory from 1978 to 1990, at which time he founded the Sleep Disorders Center of Georgia. Dr. Wellman is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonology and sleep medicine. He has over 25 years experience in sleep medicine. He received his medical degree from West Virginia University School of Medicine, and a Masters in Public Health from the University of North Carolina. He served his medical internship and residency at Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital and a fellowship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. Dr. Wellman has held instructor positions at both Harvard Medical School and Emory University School of Medicine, and has been published in the American Review of Respiratory Diseases, The Journal of Clinical Investigation and The Journal of the American Medical Association. He is a recognized authority and frequent speaker on the topic of sleep disorders.

D. Alan Lankford, Ph.D., ABSM

Dr. Lankford is co-founder and Administrative Director of the Sleep Disorders Center of Gerogia. Dr. Lankford became the first board certified sleep specialist in Georgia in 1987, and has been credited with developing one of the leading programs for insomnia treatment in the southeast. Formerly he was Executive Director of Behavioral Medicine Services at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. Before that he was Assistant Professor, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas. Dr. Lankford received his Masters and Doctorate at the University of Georgia. He is an elected member of the American Psychological Association and a fellow of the Clinical Sleep Society.

Abul F.M. Matin, M.D., Ph.D., ABSM

Dr. Matin joined the Sleep Disorders Center of Georgia in July 2001. He relocated from Bethesda, Maryland where he served as Fellow and Principal Investigator for the Pulmonary-Critical Care Medicine Branch, National Institutes of Health. He completed his Fellowship in Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine with Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta in 1999 and his Residency in Internal Medicine with State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1997. Dr. Matin is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Medicine. His doctoral Research Fellowship was completed in 1994 with Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Japan. Dr. Matin has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors for research and postgraduate studies as well as being fluent in the Japanese language.
